About the Early Prenatal Risk Assessment (ERA) Program

The Early Prenatal Risk Assessment (ERA) Program is a multidisciplinary collaborative of EFW Radiology, Specialists in Diagnostic Imaging, Calgary Laboratory Services, and the Calgary Health Region, Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medical Genetics.

The ERA Program is striving to:
Promote the health and well-being of pregnant women through a collaborative and multidisciplinary regional prenatal risk assessment program that would enable early, more accurate identification and management of pregnancies at increased risk for adverse perinatal health outcomes.

In doing so, the ERA Program will:
  • Provide updated high quality public and physician education.
  • Provide a standard of excellence in the provision of prenatal health care services.
  • Support research that improves the health of pregnant women and their babies.

Prenatal risk assessment, screening and diagnostic initiatives undertaken by the ERA are directed by Advisory and Management Committees, comprised of representatives from the partner organizations.

The benefits of the ERA program for Moms-To-Be:
  • High quality prenatal health services centering on woman’s autonomy and informed choice.
  • Patient-centered prenatal testing services that focus on women’s expectations and satisfaction.
The benefits of the ERA Program for prenatal care providers:
  • To provide the most effective prenatal screening and diagnostic services.
  • To develop an early risk assessment program, using biochemical and ultrasound markers that would identify pregnancies at increased risk for adverse perinatal health outcomes.
  • To provide evidence-based algorithms of care to guide obstetric management and level of prenatal surveillance for high or at-risk pregnancies.
